Dia de los Muertos Success!
Thank you to everyone who participated in, helped, or donated time and resources to the
Dia de los Muertos celebration! This event was a first at Baywood, so getting the word out to families proved a minor challenge. However, big or small, we were prepared to make the celebration as successful and joyous as possible! It turns out the event was meant to be big!
About 50 people showed up and participated in the activities over the course of the 1 hour event span. Baywood students, Cal Poly Buddies, .teachers, parents, and grandparents enjoyed making Sugar Skull marshmallow pops, Calavera masks, and Calavera/Calaca collages.
Throughout the day I talked about the historical and cultural aspects of Dia de los Muertos with the classes that visited the library, including reading a bilingual picture book about the celebration. Dia de los Muertos themed informational books were set on our display table--along with family pictures, artwork, and other decorations--for everyone to peruse throughout the day and at the event. Families and teachers have even come up to me today (the day after the event) wanting to check out the books!
This is a tradition I would love to continue and expand at Baywood!
