New Library Sections

Last Friday and this morning, I spent a good chunk of time re-organizing our fiction section.

Something I have noticed each week when our 1st and 2nd graders visit the library, is that they desperately want to get a book from the older fiction section.

At the beginning of the school year, I put baskets of popular bridge book series (i.e. Magic Tree House, My Weird School, Junie B. Jones, etc.), in the storybook room where our younger grades usually spend library time. The storybook room not only houses our picture books and easy readers, but has an extensive section of non-fiction for younger readers--which I highly encourage students to check out. Although students enjoy the fiction series I put out for them, there are only 5 or 6 series put out at a time, which creates a real lack of diverse reading options. Naturally, the students gravitate toward the end of the higher fiction section, which was located at the entrance to the storybook area.

With all of this in mind, I shifted the entire fiction section so that the shelves near the storybook room would be empty. I then went through all of fiction and pulled books that would be appropriate in length, level, and content for these transitional readers. I reshelved these bridge books in this newly empty section, creating a unique bridge book section for our readers!

I also emptied a bay for new books that the library receives. Previously, the new book display was in the storybook room. The bin that housed the new books was not ideal for propping books up, and hardly any students looked in the bin. The new location for the new titles is located right in the middle of the library. All of the books are face out to grab reader's attention.

Come to the library and check out the new sections!
